When I was
young, I loved to sing. I was a member of a band called Red Starlights.
Later this group broke up. My best friend, Ken Lee (I still call
him KV or Kavye) and I formed a wonderful duet called Kaverley
Duo. We had many enjoyable hours honing our singing and guitar
skills.
In
the VI Musical Society I was very active as well. It was here
we organized the first and many subsequent annual Talentime events.
The organizational tasks included putting up an annual show, and
promoted, we sold tickets, became stewards of the revenues, etc.
Then at the University of Malaya in 1962 I volunteered as a key
organizer of “Universarama” a charity variety show.
It was during the process of this event that I got a break as
a songwriter. I invited a top Singapore group, The Sundowners,
to be the top bill for Universarama. I pitched my song That’s
The One For Me to them, and it resulted as a EMI/Capitol flip
side of their single Malaysia Wonderful. My song became top tune
for three weeks instead!
I
was a competitive swimmer…I set a 50 m backstroke record
in 1960, and it still stands today. Of course today by Olympic
standards, I wouldn’t have qualified in the first round!
By the way I do not swim any more.
But
Mabel and I have been ballroom dancing for over 10 years, and
loving it! We do not compete – too much stress.
